Giving back to nature is important for all companies to consider to help reverse the environmental decline.
Admittedly when you have huge spaces of land it can be seen as easier – already within PGL Beyond’s rewilding plan we have dedicated a total area of 503,648 sqm to rewilding. That’s the equivalent of 70 football pitches!
Whilst our aim is to protect and improve the biodiversity in and around where we operate, so wildlife can thrive, and habitats can regenerate, with an ambition of protecting 15% of our UK sites for rewilding, what can you do if space is limited?
- Firstly, don’t be put off by only having small areas of land. Whatever you can hand back to nature will be positive.
- Whatever space you can allocate then introduce a reduced mowing cycle, only doing so once a year, mowing to no less than 3 inches of height, and conducting walkthroughs in advance to give sheltering wildlife chance to relocate, which supports habitats used by pollinators, improves soil health, conserves water and reduces pollution.
- Control any Invasive Native Species (INS) to allow the ecosystems to function and in doing so, they become healthier and benefit the environment
- Commit to the three D’s of rewilding, which gives you the best chance of creating sustainable ecosystems rich in animal and plant wildlife:
🌱 Dispersal – making it easy for wildlife to move across your land by removing barriers
🌱 Diversity – ensuring there is diversity within the habitats
🌱 Disturbance – allowing the natural landscape to change where it is safe to do so
Where we are limited in some of our outdoor spaces, for instance on a business park, we have also taken on a roundabout and turned over to rewilding. But you could also implement bug or bee hotels – purchase or build yourself with some advice here from the Woodland Trust.
Whatever you do, ensure you make visitors aware of your work. With guests coming to our centres, we want to educate them in the work that we are doing in this space and educate them on the native species we are lucky to have. We have worked to create species info boards that showcase the natural habitats in place across all our sites.
