One of the biggest developments on an environmental front in the last twelve months was the introduction of our new Environmental Management System (EMS).
It allows us across the group to be able to manage resource more efficiently, control utilities usage, water usage and waste production, and focuses us on how and when we use these resources more wisely.
What we have seen, and as shown in our most recent Impact Report, is a small increase across our overall waste between 2023 and 2024 and into 2025. Whilst this is disappointing to see, much of this is largely due to the robustness of the data and navigating new processes.
It’s not where we would want to find ourselves and the embedding of our new system took longer than we would have wanted. This is due to the complexities of the business and availability of data.
| Topic | KPI | Target | 2024 performance | 2025 performance | On track? |
| Electric Consumption | Reduce metered electricity consumption per night stay from a FY24 baseline | by 3% annually | 6.567 kWh/night stay

tCO2e – tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent – the unit used to measure the global warming potential (GEP) of various greenhouse gases
So where do we go from here?
The good news as we move into 2026 is we have set up some more collaborative ways of working to ensure better data handling and understanding of our targets. We’ve also allocated more accountability at each individual site level in terms of waste and water usage and diverting more waste from landfill.
And we’re committed to sharing our progress via our annual impact report each year.
We are expanding the EMS data sheet so that we can report on all our waste streams (we have six – general waste, landfill, incineration, anaerobic digestion, dry mixed recyclables and glass). This will enable centres to identify which waste streams are going to landfill and incineration. In turn this will drive the centre operations to manage their on site waste splitting ensuring bins are filled correctly. It also provides us with data to challenge our suppliers, seeking alternative packaging methods.
