PGL partners with STA to deliver lifesaving BLE-Anaphylaxis training to thousands of staff

PGL has announced an important new first-aid partnership with The Swimming Teachers’ Association (STA), which will see the UK’s leading outdoor education provider roll out BLS-Anaphylaxis training over the next two years. This initiative will equip thousands of PGL colleagues with essential lifesaving skills to support guests and colleagues in the event of a severe allergic reaction.

The BLS-Anaphylaxis training will be implemented across PGL’s 16 UK activity centres, reinforcing the company’s commitment to safety and preparedness. Key training began in January 2025, with the goal of training between 2,000 and 2,500 colleagues by November 2026. This includes both guest-facing and non-guest-facing roles, ensuring a widespread understanding of anaphylaxis management across the organisation.

With a rise in diagnosed allergies – NHS data shows that hospital admissions due to allergies and anaphylaxis in England have nearly doubled over the past 20 years particularly among children – the majority of those trained at PGL will be Activity Instructors / Group Leaders (AIGLs). They work closely with approximately 300,000 young people annually, providing enriching and exciting experiences such as abseiling, canoeing, music, history, and ski tours, and are often the first responders in an emergency. This training from STA will give them the confidence and skills to act swiftly and effectively.

John-Ross Henderson, People Development Trainer / Facilitator at PGL, said: “PGL’s Health and Safety team has identified that instances of anaphylactic reactions are rising, much as they are in wider society, so it makes perfect sense to upskill our teams. Though we have industry-leading allergen training and procedures in place, it is vital that as many colleagues as possible are equipped to respond in case the worst happens.”

Endorsed by CIMSPA, industry leaders in sport and physical activity, and regulated by Ofqual, STA’s four-hour CPR and Anaphylaxis course will train participants in the safe use of an adrenaline auto-injector (AAI), such as an EpiPen®, and the correct administration of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

Zoe Cooper, Commercial Director at STA, said: “We have enjoyed a long successful partnership with PGL, and this latest initiative demonstrates our shared mission to provide high-quality training that prioritises safety and enhances the well-being of their guests and staff alike.”

“By rolling out our BLS-Anaphylaxis training across its centres, PGL is taking a proactive, and responsible approach to ensuring the safety of everyone who visits or works within its facilities.”

John-Ross added: “PGL has been working in partnership with STA for several years, and we both firmly believe that while activities should be fun, safety is paramount. Over the years, PGL has been continually impressed with STA’s dedication, expertise, and high-quality training delivery.”
